Local Education

Lake Dallas Independent School District and Denton Independent School District serve the educational needs of students in Hickory Creek and Shady Shores. As the smaller of the two districts, Lake Dallas ISD is made up of three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, while Denton ISD includes one early childhood center, twenty elementary schools, six middle schools, two alternative schools, and three high schools. Both districts boast challenging curricula that prepares students for a lifetime of non-stop learning.

Higher learning facilities are available for the benefit of residents. These include Texas Woman’s University, University of North Texas, Brookhaven College, Collin County Community College, University of Texas-Dallas, and University of Dallas, among others.

Future Economic Development

Denton County’s newest addition to the area will be that of Stellar US, LLC of Irving, TX, a leading global call center that is relocating its operations from Lake Havasu City, AZ to Hickory Creek. With the addition of Stellar US, the company is expected to bring over 300 new jobs to the area, a major advantage for residents of both Hickory Creek and Shady Shores. The call center will be located in a 23,279-square foot space in the Cornelius Town Center, which is slated for completion during the fourth quarter of 2010.


Residents of Hickory Creek and Shady Shores can easily fly in and out of the area by way of Denton Airport, Addison Airport, and Fort Worth Alliance Airport. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field are a little less than an hour’s drive from the area. Public transportation is provided by the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) and the I-35 serves as the main commuter artery for residents and businesses alike.

Parks & Recreation

There are a number of different community parks open for residents of Hickory Creek and Shady Shores. Each park provides visitors with a host of unique amenities, including picnic grounds, fishing areas, boat launches and ramps, and playground equipment. Area parks include Arrowhead, Harbor Lane, Hickory Creek, Oakland, Point Vista, Tanglewood, Sycamore Bend, and Westlake.

Residents of Hickory Creek and Shady Shores live by one of the most popular lakes in Texas: Lewisville Lake. Officially known as a reservoir, Lewisville Lake is located in North Texas on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. Boating as well as fishing and camping are popular here at the lake. Other activities around the lake include a few areas for hunting feral hogs and water fowl. Other amenities include two lakefront restaurants, Charlie’s and Sneaky Pete’s and five marinas that have hosted large scale bass fishing tournaments since 2005. Aside from largemouth bass, fishermen can fish for spotted bass, white crappie, white bass, hybrid striped bass, and blue and channel catfish.
